Rescue
North Carolina
Announces
Technical
Rescue Continuing Education Programs
The myth....
"My certification is only good for 3 years! Therefore, I must re-certify every
3 years in order to keep my certifications."
Fact: Many certifying rescue training organizations or delivery agencies may imply your
certifications are only valid for 3 years. After all, your id card may have
an expiration date. This is the recommended re-certification period by the
N.F.P.A. and rescue training companies for those responders who do not
attend Technician level rescue continuing education courses.
Fact:
Most students who become certified in the field of water, rope, and other
forms of technical rescue rarely practice their skills and often become
deficient in their ability to perform safe rescues as originally trained and
certified.
If you do not practice your skills, you and your rescue team are
compromising the safety of the team and their patients.
Fact:
Very few rescue organizations require team members to attend a
continuing education program for swiftwater or rope rescue in order to
maintain proficiency to the NFPA 1006 Technician level for water or rope.
Fact:
Factors impacting responders from maintaining their rescue training:
-
Limited
funding by responders or community colleges for technical rescue training.
-
Increasing
costs of the rescue courses are no longer affordable
to send multiple members from one agency.
-
The poor
economy and rising fuel costs.
-
Increased
costs for lodging.
-
Less classes
being offered prohibits opportunities for training.

"Once a student has completed initial N.F.P.A
1006/1670 Technician Level rescue training courses, we strongly recommend that
the student continue to practice & train in order to maintain their skill
levels. Without sufficient practice, their skills become outdated and refreshers
are needed."
It is important to note that neither NFPA 1670 nor 1006 specify or require any time period
for recertification.
Thus, the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) is
ultimately responsible for deciding how often rescuers must re-certify.”
1
What does this mean?
This indicates the AHJ can elect to implement an in-house continuing
education program or attend a training course in the rescue discipline at the
Technician Level as a measure to maintain the skill proficiency for their
members.
Our goal at Rescue NC is to create a continuing education program for
your responders that is delivered semi-annual or annually as a measure to
maintain their certified skill level and stay proficient in order to ensure the responder's safety
and efficiency during such emergencies.
Our Clinics
Our continuing education courses
are customized courses specifically
aimed at maintaining the training of responders trained to the N.F.P.A. 1006
Technician level for extrication, rope, swiftwater, and confined space rescue.
All of our courses have 1-2 hours of lecture followed by extensive
scenario-based team assessments stations. (All scenarios are performed in
teams.)
These courses are
designed to fit your jurisdictions specific training needs in a 1 or 2 day
